FONOM Board Meeting – May 13th, 2020
The Federation of Northeastern Ontario Municipalities met on Wednesday, May 13th, 2020, by ZOOM, to discuss the issues and challenges facing their 110 members. Since the COVID19 Pandemic contributed to the cancellation of FONOM’s Annual Conference, the Executive and Board have been meeting monthly to understand the changing landscape better.
FONOM Appoints Mac Bain as new Executive Director
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) would like to announce, the appointment of Mac Bain as its New Executive Director. “Mac’s knowledge of the issues facing our region will be an asset to our membership. He will fulfill the duties of the Executive Director on a part time basis under the direction of the Executive. Mac has stepped down from the Board and the Executive, and we expect the City of North Bay to appoint a new representative to the Board shortly” said FONOM President Danny Whalen.

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) will join more than 1,000 participants from across the province at the 2020 Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) Conference in Toronto from January 19 to 21.

“On behalf of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) I want to congratulate all the MP’s from northeastern Ontario that were recently elected in the Federal Election, as well as the candidates that put their names forward”, said FONOM President Danny Whalen.

This past August, FONOM was well represented at the AMO Conference in Ottawa and meetings were held with several Provincial Cabinet Ministers. The following is a summary of the issues raised on behalf of northeastern municipalities and the recommendations provided to Provincial representatives.

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) President Danny Whalen, will join about 2,000 participants at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s (AMO) 2019 Conference in Ottawa from August 18 to 21. For more than a century, Ontario’s largest municipal conference has brought together municipal, provincial and federal officials to work collectively to overcome municipal challenges and plan for the future.

Observations de la FMNO sur le budget 2018 de l’Ontario
À la Fédération des municipalités du Nord de l’Ontario (FMNO), on a étudié le budget 2018 de l’Ontario, déposé en chambre le 28 mars 2018 par M. Charles Sousa, ministre des Finances de la province. « Alors que ce budget dresse la liste d’investissements importants grandement nécessaires, nous nous préoccupons du fait que le gouvernement sera déficitaire jusqu’en 2024-2025, surtout dans une période où l’économie se porte bien » a déclaré M. Alan Spacek, maire de Kapuskasing et président de la FMNO.
FONOM Comments on the 2018 Ontario Budget
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) has reviewed the 2018 Ontario Budget which was released by the Minister of Finance, Honourable Charles Sousa, in the Ontario Legislature on March 28, 2018. “While the Budget listed significant investments to be made that are greatly needed, we are concerned about the government running deficits until 2024-2025, particularly at a time when the economy is doing well,” says Mayor Al Spacek of the Town of Kapuskasing and President of FONOM.

December 6, 2017 – Kirkland Lake, ON- The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) commends the provincial government’s announcement to improve transportation services within and between communities across the North. The announcement to enhance bus services and implement the Community Transportation Grant Program was made on December 1, 2017 by the Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Michael Gravelle and the Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca alongside the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Bill Mauro.
