FONOM and Nishnawbe Aski Nation Discuss the Future of First Nation Education

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) met with representatives of Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) on October 29, 2013 in Timmins to gain a better understanding of the position of NAN First Nations with respect to Governance and Education jurisdiction. FONOM and NAN are calling on the federal government to support NAN’s vision of education.

Réunion du conseil d’administration de la FMNO le 13 mai 2020

La Fédération des municipalités du Nord de l’Ontario (FMNO) s’est réunie le mercredi 13 mai 2020, via ZOOM, afin de discuter des défis et des préoccupations partagés par les membres. Depuis l’annulation de la conférence annuelle de la FMNO, en raison de la COVID-19, le comité exécutif ainsi que le conseil, continuent à se réunir, de façon virtuelle, afin de mieux comprendre la réalité créée par la pandémie. Le président Danny Whalen a déclaré « étant donné que plusieurs de nos membres siègent à d’autres tables politiques, il est primordial d’entendre d’eux, afin de bien comprendre les effets et l’impact de la COVID-19, dans notre région. »

FONOM Board Meeting – May 13th, 2020

The Federation of Northeastern Ontario Municipalities met on Wednesday, May 13th, 2020, by ZOOM, to discuss the issues and challenges facing their 110 members. Since the COVID19 Pandemic contributed to the cancellation of FONOM’s Annual Conference, the Executive and Board have been meeting monthly to understand the changing landscape better.

FONOM Appoints Mac Bain as new Executive Director

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) would like to announce, the appointment of Mac Bain as its New Executive Director. “Mac’s knowledge of the issues facing our region will be an asset to our membership. He will fulfill the duties of the Executive Director on a part time basis under the direction of the Executive. Mac has stepped down from the Board and the Executive, and we expect the City of North Bay to appoint a new representative to the Board shortly” said FONOM President Danny Whalen.

Today, Ontario’s Environment Minister Jeff Yurek formally announced the final regulation to transition the Blue Box program from municipalities to producers. When fully implemented, this regulation will go a long way in addressing litter in our communities, reducing single-use plastics making their way into watercourses and expanding the Blue Box program into new communities in Northern Ontario.
