Leaders from across the North attended the Northern Leaders’ Forum which brought provincial government officials, including the Premier, eight Cabinet Ministers and one Parliamentary Assistant to Timmins on December 6, 2013
The Forum consisted of an implementation update of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario by the Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Michael Gravelle, presentations from the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, Eric Hoskins and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, Glen Murray as well as a presentation by the Northeast Community Network (NeCN). The Premier of Ontario, Kathleen Wynne made remarks and moderated a discussion where delegates directed questions towards the Premier and her Cabinet. The afternoon consisted of breakout sessions where delegates could meet with Ministers in a smaller, more interactive setting to discuss issues related to the Northern Growth Plan.
Representatives from FONOM attended the event including Board members, Al Spacek, Tom Laughren, Danny Whalen, Paul Schoppmann, Marianne Matichuk and Information and Communications Officer, Alison Stanley.
Also taking place was a “historic meeting between representatives of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM), Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA), Northern Ontario Large Urban Mayors (NOLUM), and the four First Nation Treaty areas within Northern Ontario” says FONOM President, Al Spacek. The meeting demonstrated “a commitment to come together and help move the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario forward,” continued Spacek.
FONOM looks forward to working with the province and partners after the Premier voiced a commitment that her Northern Ministry would meet with municipal and regional leaders quarterly to discuss opportunities and challenges that face the North.
