FONOM Holds Final Board Meeting of the Year

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities Board of Directors held its November 14, 2013 Board meeting in Little Current. President of FONOM, Alan Spacek, updated the Board on the current status of FONOM’s involvement with a number of key issues as well as projects to be undertaken moving into the New Year.
FONOM representation continues to sit on the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) Ministerial Advisory Committee and although there is an “appreciation for the complexity of the issue, there is concern about the time length of the process,” says Spacek. FONOM is monitoring discussions with the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to address negative impacts on particular municipalities and provide solutions to avoid future occurances. FONOM is seeking to expand their relationship with Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN), which is believed to be the third link with FONOM and the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA), around issues affecting Northern Ontario. FONOM has gained strategic experience within the forestry industry and hopes that this will result in greater attention to the sector which is a driving force for economic prosperity in the North.
As a member of the Ontario Trails Coordinating Committee, FONOM continues to advocate for predictable and sustainable funding for Northern Ontario trails where many are multi use. FONOM will seek input from regional stakeholders concerning a proposal for new law reform projects which was announced by the Law Commission of Ontario.
The Board discussed the upcoming Annual Conference in partnership with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) that will take place in Sault Ste. Marie, May 7, 8 and 9th, 2014. FONOM is looking forward to another successful conference where delegates, Ministers, businesses and others come together to focus on issues that impact the North.
The next scheduled meeting for the FONOM Board will be held on January 23rd, 2014 in Elliot Lake.
