FONOM/MMAH Annual Conference Opens in Sault Ste. Marie

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) / Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) 54th Annual Conference kicks off on Wednesday, May 7th in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
This year’s conference theme, Northern by Nature, will highlight the strengths and opportunities in the north with information sessions on regional partnerships, succession planning, and the future of the agriculture and energy sectors to name a few.
Delegates attending are comprised of Mayors, Councillors and senior municipal staff from all over the north. The response to this year’s conference has been significant, with exhibitor spaces selling out with twenty eight along with fourteen sponsors.
The conference will provide an opportunity for municipal leaders to hear from the Ontario government on key priorities as well as to address provincial representatives during the Minister’s Forum which will include several Cabinet Ministers.
A highlight on Thursday, May 8th is the presentation of the FONOM Executive Award that is awarded to a person with a distinguished political career and who has shown dedication and exemplary efforts in the growth and prosperity of the north.
The main conference venue is the Comfort Suites and Conference Centre, 229 Great Northern Road, Sault Ste. Marie. About 250 delegates are expected for the conference. The FONOM membership is made up of 110 municipalities/towns/cities of northeastern Ontario, with the majority of delegates representing these areas.
